Our Team

Paula graduated in 2003 from the University of Tasmania with a combined degree in Commerce and Law.  She was admitted to the Supreme Court of Tasmania and subsequently the High Court of Australia in 2004, after completing the mandatory legal practice course.

Paula has practised in Hobart, in the field of litigation, since admission; initially in general litigation for the first two years (including commercial litigation, personal injury and criminal defence) then ultimately specialising in commercial litigation/dispute resolution.  This is a very comprehensive area of law, which includes a range of disputes outlined and explained further on our “Dispute Resolution and Litigation” page, and for which the assistance of a lawyer can mean the difference between a favourable outcome and one resulting in adverse financial (and other) consequences.  Such disputes are often complex and involve commercial parties (companies and businesses) and/or individuals.

Paula has been a partner of two of Hobart’s larger law firms before opening Paula Sutherland & Associates, offering specialist litigation services.

Paula has undertaken post-graduate study in insolvency in 2008 through the University of Southern Queensland, being the Advanced Insolvency Course, which has enabled her to offer specialist services in this area also.

Paula prides herself on being approachable, empathetic and relatable to clients, providing expert advice and guidance with a view to assisting clients through their disputes, whether or not they become litigious.  She acts for both corporate clients and individuals.

Paula is an advocate for exhausting all possible avenues of resolution before engaging in litigation, which can be costly, carry risk and generally be a very stressful experience for clients.

Whilst Paula acts as counsel on the majority of her matters and is a seasoned advocate, she also has a small group of specialist barristers that she briefs when necessary or requested.

Paula is committed to achieving the best outcome for clients in an expedient and cost-effective manner.

Pauls welcomes client enquiries in relation to new and existing matters. Paula has regularly acted as agent for mainland firms and mercantile agencies and is happy to continue to do so.

Paula has been recognised as a preeminent and leading commercial litigation and dispute resolution lawyer in Tasmania in 2017, 2018, and 2021 by the Doyles Guide.

Kelly graduated in 2011 from the University of Tasmania with a combined degree in Arts and Law.  After completing the mandatory legal practice course, she gained admission to the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 2012 and subsequently, the High Court of Australia.  In 2017, she went on to complete a Master of Laws through the College of Law, majoring in commercial litigation.

Kelly has practised predominantly in litigation since her admission in 2012 and brings a wealth of knowledge, having practised across various State and Federal Courts in Tasmania, Queensland and NSW.  She is experienced in dealing with employment law (for both employees and employers), professional negligence claims, personal injury law, motor vehicle injury, worker’s compensation claims, family law and various manners of commercial and contractual disputes.  She also has experience prosecuting and defending matters for a Department within the NSW State Government.

Kelly prides herself on being a strong but pragmatic advocate who does things differently.  In 2016, Kelly became a Nationally Accredited Mediator and whilst not currently practising as a mediator, she uses those skills to assist clients in identifying the real issues in dispute and to settle matters as early as possible.

Kelly recognizes the importance of exhausting dispute resolution options before commencing proceedings in court and makes an effort to listen to her clients’ needs in order to achieve the best outcome for their situation, with the aim of saving them undue stress, time and money.

Giorgio recently commenced at Paula Sutherland & Associates after a number of years practising at another Hobart law firm. He is a commercial solicitor practising in the commercial, property and wills and estates areas.

Prior to be being admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of Tasmania, Giorgio practised for many years as a chartered accountant, with a particular focus on taxation. This combination allows Giorgio to bring a particularly strong commercial acumen when assisting clients.

Giorgio is approachable and client focused, and enjoys applying a personal touch to his work.

Phillippa Reid joined Paula Sutherland & Associates as a conveyancing Paralegal in 2021, having significant experience with financial planning and mortgage broker firms.  Her high expectations of herself are an asset to the precision and accuracy demanded of her in her current position.  Currently balancing this with her role as a parent of two young children is made possible with the flexibility of a contemporary workplace like Paula Sutherland & Associates.

Phillippa has a love of travel, with a highlight being the opportunity to travel as a volunteer assistant for vets in Nepal, travelling to extremely remote areas for the desexing of dogs, and the education of the local village communities about canine health and the dangers of rabies.  This came about as a consequence of her science degree studies. She has had many overseas adventures but wouldn’t live anywhere else other than Tasmania.
